Equipment

  • large saucepan
  • Frying pan
  • Baking Sheet
  • slotted spoon
  • Serving dish
  • Cheese grater
  • cutting board
  • Knife
  • spatula

Ingredients

  • 4 large Potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 cup Grated Cheese
  • for garnish Fresh Cilantro

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven - Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it's ready for baking the fries later on.
  • Prepare the Masala Gravy - In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter for a few seconds. Stir in the coriander powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala, and cook for a minute until fragrant. Add water and salt to taste, then bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow the masala gravy to cook on low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The gravy should thicken slightly.
  • Prepare the Fries - Cut the potatoes into French fry shapes, about ¼-inch thick. Rinse the cut potatoes with cold water to remove excess starch. Pat them dry using a kitchen towel or paper towels. In a frying pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Working in batches, fry the potatoes until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fries to a baking sheet lined with paper towels, and pat them gently to remove any excess oil.
  • Bake the Fries - Transfer the fried fries to the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until they are crispy and golden brown. This step helps ensure the fries are uniformly cooked and crispy.
  • Assemble and Serve - Place a generous portion of the baked fries on a serving dish. Pour the hot masala gravy over the fries. Sprinkle grated cheese on top. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves for a pop of freshness. Serve the Spiced Masala Poutine immediately while it's still hot and enjoy!
