As a proud Mexican, I grew up surrounded by tropical fruits and seafood dishes. That’s why I fell in love with Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers – it’s like a taste of home in every bite. Plus, the sweet-savory combo just screams summer. Living in the United States, I’ve learned to appreciate and incorporate different flavors into my cooking, and this recipe is a perfect example of that. It’s a fusion of Asian and tropical flavors that make for a mouthwatering dish.

Did you know that teriyaki sauce actually originated in Japan? The word ‘teriyaki’ comes from the Japanese words ‘teri’ (glaze) and ‘yaki’ (grilled). It was first made by Japanese cooks in the 17th century, and eventually made its way to the United States in the 1960s. It’s now a widely popular sauce that adds a sweet and savory flavor to many dishes. And let’s not forget about pineapple – this delicious fruit is native to South America and was introduced to Asia in the 16th century. It’s now widely used in Asian cuisine, and for good reason – it adds a juicy sweetness to any dish it’s paired with. The combination of teriyaki sauce and pineapple is a match made in heaven, and Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers are a perfect example of that flavorful fusion.

What you need

Let me tell you all about my new favorite recipe: Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers! These skewers are the perfect combination of sweet and savory flavors, thanks to the juicy pineapple and tangy teriyaki sauce. Making them is a breeze – just soak some bamboo skewers in water, toss the shrimp, pineapple, and onion with the sauce, and then grill the skewers to perfection. The steps are easy to follow, but the end result is oh-so-impressive. And don’t worry if you don’t have an outdoor grill – an indoor grill pan will do the trick just fine! Whether you’re serving these skewers as an appetizer or a main course, they’re sure to be a crowd-pleaser. So the next time you want to add a tropical twist to your BBQ, give these Pineapple Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers a try!

Ingredients:

  • Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki sauce – The star ingredient of the dish, Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce gives the shrimp a sweet and tangy flavor that perfectly complements the grilled pineapple. You can swap this for regular teriyaki sauce if needed.
  • large shrimp – The main protein in the dish, you’ll want to find large shrimp (16-20 per pound) for the best taste and easy skewering. You can swap this for chicken or beef, if desired.
  • fresh pineapple – Fresh pineapple brings a tropical sweetness to the dish and complements the teriyaki sauce perfectly. You can swap this for other tropical fruits like mango or papaya, if you prefer.
  • red onion – Red onion adds a bold flavor and a bit of bite that pairs well with the sweet pineapple and savory teriyaki sauce. You can swap this for regular onion or leave it out altogether.
  • bamboo skewers – Bamboo skewers are needed to assemble the skewers and ensure everything cooks evenly. Soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using to prevent scorching on the grill.

Utensils:

  • Grill – You can use an indoor grill, an outdoor grill, or a grill pan for this recipe.
  • Large mixing bowl – You’ll use the mixing bowl to toss the shrimp and the veggies with the teriyaki sauce.
  • Cutting board – You’ll need cutting board to cut the pineapple and the onion into chunks.
  • Knife – You’ll need a good knife to cut the pineapple and the onion.
  • Measuring cups and spoons – You’ll need measuring cups and spoons to accurately measure the ingredients.
  • Skewers – You’ll need skewers for the shrimp, pineapple, and onion.

Pineapples – Sweet and Juicy Tropical Treats!

Ah, pineapples, the ubiquitous tropical fruit that brings back memories of sunny beaches and lazy summer days. Pineapples are packed with vitamin C and bromelain, a natural enzyme that can help with digestion and reduce inflammation. For this recipe, I recommend using fresh pineapple as it has a bright and sweet flavor that complements the savory teriyaki sauce. One tip for cutting pineapple is to cut off the top and the bottom, cut off the skin and then cut the flesh away from the tough core. And if you want a little extra kick, sprinkle some chili powder on the pineapple chunks before grilling them!

Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce – A Sweet and Savory Twist on Regular Teriyaki Sauce!

Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce is the star ingredient in this dish and it’s what sets this recipe apart from any other teriyaki-based recipe out there. This sauce is made with sweet, juicy pineapple and other natural flavors to give it a unique sweetness and tanginess that take this dish to the next level! The teriyaki sauce is made with soy sauce, which some people might worry about because of its high sodium content. But the good news is that you don’t need to use a lot of it to get great flavor – a little goes a long way. And if you prefer, you can always make your own teriyaki sauce at home using low-sodium soy sauce and your preferred sweetener.

What to serve it with?

I usually serve Trader Joe’s Pineapple Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers with a side of white rice and a refreshing cucumber salad. The rice complements the sweet-savory flavors of the skewers and soaks up any extra sauce left on the plate. The cucumber salad is a perfect light and crispy side, adding a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors of the skewers. Plus, both rice and cucumber are staple ingredients in my culture and cuisine, so they hold a special place in my heart. Trust me, this combo of pineapple teriyaki skewers, rice, and cucumber salad will have you dreaming of tropical beaches and sunny days.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Trader Joe's Pineapple Teriyaki sauce
  • 1 pound large shrimp
  • 1 whole, cut into chunks fresh pineapple
  • 1 large, cut into chunks red onion
  • 8 bamboo skewers

Instructions

  • Soak your bamboo skewers - Soak the bamboo skewers in a shallow dish or bowl filled with water for at least 30 minutes before using them. This will prevent the skewers from burning on the grill.
  • Preheat your grill - Heat your grill to medium-high heat (around 375 to 400 degrees F). - You can also use a grill pan or indoor grill if you don't have an outdoor grill available.
  • Prepare the Shrimp and Veggies - In a large mixing bowl, combine the raw shrimp, pineapple chunks, and red onion. Pour the Trader Joe's Pineapple Teriyaki Sauce over the shrimp and veggies, and toss to coat everything evenly. - Make sure the pineapple and onion chunks are roughly the same size for even cooking. You can also use chicken or beef instead of shrimp if you prefer.
  • Skewer your shrimp and veggies - Thread 1 shrimp, 1 piece of pineapple and 1 piece of red onion onto each skewer. Repeat until all the skewers are filled. - Make sure to alternate the shrimp, pineapple, and onion for an even distribution of flavors.
  • Grill the Skewers - Place the skewers on the preheated grill and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until the shrimp are pink and no longer translucent. - Be careful not to overcook the shrimp or they will become tough. You can also brush some extra teriyaki sauce over the skewers while grilling for extra flavor.
  • Serve and Enjoy! - Once the skewers are cooked, transfer them to a serving platter and garnish with a sprinkle of chopped cilantro and sliced scallions. Serve warm with extra teriyaki sauce on the side, if desired. - These skewers make a perfect appetizer or main course for any summer gathering. You can also serve them with some rice or noodles to make them a more substantial meal.
