As an Iranian graphic designer and painter who loves exploring different cultures and cuisines, I’m always on the hunt for new and exciting recipes to try out. Growing up in Iran, I was lucky enough to taste many different fruits, including the king of fruits – mango. It holds a special place in my heart and reminds me of sunny and cheerful summer days. When I moved to Japan, I was thrilled to discover new varieties of mango and incorporate them into my recipes. This Spicy Mango Avocado Toast recipe speaks to my multi-cultural background and my love for incorporating new flavors into traditional dishes. It’s a perfect fusion of Iranian and Japanese cultures, and I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do.

The origin of the Spicy Mango Avocado Toast recipe is somewhat hazy, but it is believed to have originated in California in the early 2000s. California is infamous for its toast culture, and it comes as no surprise that several cafes started pairing mashed avocado with various toppings on toast. The idea of adding tropical fruits to the toast recipe was inspired by the multicultural population in California. Mango, with its sweet and tangy flavor, proved to be the perfect fruit to pair with avocados. The addition of jalapeno peppers stems from the love of spicy flavors in Mexican cuisine, which can also be commonly found in California. The recipe quickly became a viral sensation across the United States and then spread internationally, becoming a staple brunch dish worldwide.

What you need

Get ready for a brunch game-changer with this Spicy Mango Avocado Toast recipe! Not only is it a beautiful sight with its vibrant colors, but it also packs a punch of flavor in every bite. This recipe features perfectly toasted bread slices, spread with creamy mashed avocado followed by a sweet and spicy mango topping. The best part? It’s incredibly easy to whip up, taking just about 15 minutes in total. All you need is a handful of fresh ingredients and a few simple kitchen tools, such as a toaster and a knife. This recipe provides a perfect balance of sweetness, creaminess, and heat, thanks to the star ingredients of mango and jalapeno. It’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even a quick snack any time during the day!

Ingredients:

  • Bread – The base of our toast. We recommend using a rustic bread variety such as sourdough or ciabatta, but any bread you have on hand will work.
  • Avocado – The star of our toast, mashed avocado provides healthy fats and a creamy texture. Can be swapped with hummus for a non-avocado alternative.
  • Mango – The sweet and spicy topping that elevates this toast. Mangoes are high in vitamin C and pairs perfectly with the creaminess of avocado. Can be swapped with pineapple or peach for a similar taste.
  • Jalapeno – Adds a spicy kick to the dish. Can be swapped with red pepper flakes to adjust to your preferred level of spice.
  • Lime – The acidity of lime juice balances out the richness of the avocado and brings out the flavor of the mango. Can be swapped with lemon juice for a similar effect.
  • Salt – Brings out the flavors of all the ingredients.
  • Pepper – Adds a bit of a bite to the dish.

Utensils:

  • Toaster – Optional, can also use a toaster oven or grill pan.
  • Knife – To slice bread, avocado, mango and jalapeno.
  • Cutting board – To slice ingredients.
  • Fork – To mash avocado.
  • Bowl – To combine chopped mango, diced jalapeno, lime juice, salt and pepper.
  • Spoon – To spoon mango topping onto toast.

Mango

Mangoes are my absolute favorite fruit, so it’s no surprise that I added them to this avocado toast recipe. Not only are they delicious, but they also happen to be packed with health benefits. Mangoes are a great source of vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system, as well as fiber, which aids in digestion. Plus, they’re a great addition to any dish for a pop of color and sweetness. And if you’re looking for a way to use up overripe mangoes, this recipe is perfect. Just chop them up and use them as the topping for this spicy and sweet toast.

Jalapeno

Jalapenos might not be everyone’s favorite ingredient, but I love them for their spicy kick and versatility. In this recipe, the diced jalapeno adds a nice level of heat to the sweet mango and creamy avocado. And if you’re not a fan of spicy foods, don’t worry! You can easily swap the jalapeno for a milder pepper or even red pepper flakes to suit your taste. Jalapenos are also a good source of vitamin C and contain capsaicin, a compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. So not only do they add flavor to our toast, they also boost our health!

What to serve it with?

I love serving my Spicy Mango Avocado Toast with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. The bitterness of coffee complements the sweet and spicy flavors of the toast, creating a perfect balance of taste. It’s a great way to start the day and feel energized. As a graphic designer, mornings are often my most productive time, and having a quick and delicious breakfast like this recipe along with a cup of coffee gives me the fuel I need to power through my work. Plus, there’s something comforting and familiar about a classic toast-coffee combination that reminds me of home. So, try this recipe with your favorite coffee, and you won’t be disappointed!
