What you need

Looking for a creative way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Look no further than this Spicy Chocolate Guacamole recipe! This unique and flavorful twist on traditional guacamole kicks things up a notch with the addition of two exciting ingredients: dark chocolate and jalapeño pepper. The dark chocolate adds a rich and velvety texture to the guacamole, while providing a hint of sweetness that perfectly balances the creaminess of the Hass avocados. The jalapeño pepper provides a spicy kick, making the guacamole more dynamic and exciting. Plus, this recipe is vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free, so it’s perfect for any dietary needs. To make this recipe, you’ll prep the ingredients, crush them using a molcajete or a mortar and pestle, incorporate the dark chocolate, and serve with tortilla chips. This Spicy Chocolate Guacamole is a fun and delicious appetizer that will impress your guests and add a touch of Mexican fiesta to your table.

Ingredients:

  • Hass avocado – The creamy and buttery Hass avocado is the star ingredient for this recipe. If you are not a fan of avocado, you may consider swapping it for a mashed sweet potato or butternut squash.
  • Dark chocolate – The dark chocolate adds a rich and velvety texture to the guacamole, boosting its flavor and complexity. You can use any type of dark chocolate you prefer, but make sure it’s pure chocolate and not sweetened or flavored.
  • Red onion – The red onion gives a refreshing crunch and sharp bite to the guacamole, balancing the sweetness of the chocolate and the creaminess of the avocado. If you don’t have red onion, you can substitute it with scallions or shallots.
  • Cilantro – The cilantro adds a bright and herbaceous note to the guacamole, complementing the spices and the chocolate. If you don’t like cilantro, you can use parsley or basil instead.
  • Jalapeño pepper – The jalapeño pepper provides the heat and spice to the guacamole, making it more exciting and dynamic. If you can’t find jalapeño, you can use any other kind of chili pepper, like serrano, habanero, or cayenne.
  • Garlic – The garlic adds a pungent and savory taste to the guacamole, enhancing the flavors of the other ingredients. If you don’t like garlic, you can omit it or use a small amount of onion powder or cumin instead.
  • Lime – The lime juice provides the acidity and tanginess to the guacamole, brightening the flavors and preventing the avocado from browning. If you don’t have lime, you can use lemon or orange juice instead.
  • Salt – The salt enhances the flavors of the guacamole, bringing everything together and making it taste more balanced and delicious. You can adjust the amount of salt according to your preference.
  • Tortilla chips – The tortilla chips are the perfect dipping vehicle for the spicy chocolate guacamole, adding crunch and texture to every bite. You can use any type of tortilla chips you like, or even make your own by cutting tortillas into wedges and frying or baking them.

Utensils:

  • Molcajete or mortar and pestle – This is the ideal tool for making guacamole, as it allows you to crush and grind the ingredients to the perfect texture and consistency. If you don’t have a molcajete, you can use a large bowl and a potato masher or a fork, but the guacamole may be less smooth.
  • Bowl – You’ll need a medium-sized bowl to mix and serve the guacamole.
  • Spoon – Use a spoon to scoop the flesh out of the avocado and to mix the ingredients together.
  • Knife – You’ll need a sharp knife to chop and dice the red onion, jalapeño pepper, and cilantro. You’ll also need a citrus juicer or a fork to extract the juice from the lime.
  • Cutting board – Use a cutting board to chop and prep your ingredients safely.
  • Serving dish – Choose a nice and vibrant dish to showcase your Spicy Chocolate Guacamole, and don’t forget to add some tortilla chips on the side!

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is one of my favorite ingredients to play with in cooking, and it’s not just because it’s delicious, but also because it’s full of antioxidants and flavonoids that have been linked to various health benefits, such as reduced inflammation and improved brain function. In this Spicy Chocolate Guacamole recipe, the dark chocolate adds a rich and velvety texture to the guacamole, and a hint of sweetness that beautifully complements the creamy Hass avocados. I love how the chocolate subverts the traditional savory flavors of guacamole, making it a surprising and delightful appetizer that will impress your guests. And here’s a fun fact for you: the ancient Aztecs believed that chocolate was an aphrodisiac, and Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, used to drink a rich and spicy chocolate beverage before visiting his harem of wives. If that’s not tantalizing enough to make you try this recipe, I don’t know what is!

Jalapeño pepper

As an adventurous eater, I’m always looking for ways to add some heat and excitement to my meals, and jalapeño peppers are one of my go-to ingredients for that. Jalapeños are spicy but not overpowering, and they have a distinctive grassy and fruity flavor that pairs well with many dishes. In this Spicy Chocolate Guacamole recipe, the jalapeño pepper provides just the right amount of kick and zing to the guacamole, balancing the sweetness of the chocolate and the creaminess of the avocado. But watch out, because jalapeños can be deceivingly unpredictable: some are mild, some are hot, and there’s no telling what you’ll get until you take a bite! If you’re not used to spicy foods, start with a small amount of jalapeño, or remove the seeds and membranes to tone down the heat. And if you’re feeling brave, try dipping a chip in the guacamole and then following it up with a sip of tequila, for a true Mexican fiesta experience!

What to serve it with?

“I absolutely love serving this Spicy Chocolate Guacamole with fresh, crispy tortilla chips. As a native of Mexico, I have many cherished memories of snacking on chips and guacamole with my family and friends. It’s a classic pairing that never gets old! The contrast of the crunchy chips with the smooth and creamy guacamole is a match made in heaven. Plus, the flavors of the guacamole really shine when paired with a simple and natural chip. I recommend choosing a chip that’s sturdy enough to hold the guacamole but still light enough to allow the richness of the dish to shine through. Whether you’re snacking alone or sharing with friends, chips and guacamole are a perfect choice for any occasion!”
