Jia Chen currently resides in Australia and grew up in China.

As someone who grew up in China and now lives in Australia, I’ve become fascinated with the intersection of Eastern and Western cuisine. Matcha, a powdered green tea commonly found in Japanese and Chinese cultures, is a key ingredient in this recipe. I love that it’s a natural way to get a caffeine hit that’s gentler than coffee. The avocado adds a creaminess that reminds me of the classic Chinese dessert, sweet tofu pudding. And the use of frozen banana is inspired by smoothie bowls, a popular breakfast dish in Australia.

While the origins of matcha are somewhat disputed, it’s widely believed that the tea leaves were first ground into powder in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE). From there, it became a popular drink in Buddhist monasteries in China and Japan. Matcha is still used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies today. When it comes to smoothie bowls, the concept originates in Hawaii, where they were popularized in the 1960s and 70s. Now, they’re an Instagram sensation and can be found in cafes and restaurants across the world. I love putting my own spin on this popular dish, and this Matcha Avocado Smoothie Bowl is one of my favorites!

Matcha Powder

Matcha is my favorite ingredient to use in smoothies because it adds a delicious and energizing flavor to any recipe. I love it so much that I even wrote an article about the benefits of matcha on my personal blog. Apart from its wonderful taste, matcha is chock-full of antioxidants, enhances mood, boosts memory, and lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels. I’ve tried numerous types of green tea over the years, but matcha is unparalleled in taste, aroma, texture, and health benefits. A long time ago, it used to be hard to find matcha at the local store, but nowadays matcha is widely available and affordable, so there’s no excuse not to try it! Trust me, once you do, your mornings will never be the same again.

Avocado

It’s no secret that avocado is one of the most beloved superfoods on the planet. Its rich and buttery taste, smooth texture, and versatility make it a crowd-pleaser. I love using avocado in smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and guacamole, just to name a few. But did you know that avocado is also great for your skin, hair, heart, and overall health? It contains healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that help reduce inflammation, regulate blood pressure, prevent cancer, promote digestion, and boost your immune system. Some people are hesitant to use avocado because of its high calorie and fat content, but when used in moderation, it can actually aid in weight loss and maintenance. Plus, avocado adds a decadent and satisfying touch to any dish. So don’t be afraid to include avocados in your smoothie bowl, and enjoy the creamy goodness that comes with every spoonful!

What to serve it with?

To make my Matcha Avocado Smoothie Bowl even more delicious, I love serving it with a slice of toasted sourdough bread. The bread’s tanginess pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the smoothie bowl, and the added crunch is a delightful texture contrast. As someone who loves exploring new flavors and experimenting in the kitchen, I also enjoy trying different toppings with my smoothie bowls. My go-to options include fresh berries, chia seeds, and shredded coconut. Not only do they add extra nutrients, but they also make the bowl look beautiful and Instagram-worthy!
