Have you ever wondered about the history of French toast? The origin of this iconic dish is somewhat unclear. Some sources suggest that it was first invented in ancient Rome, while others claim that it has European roots. One of the most interesting stories, however, relates to an English nobleman who accidentally created the dish in the 1700s. While staying at a French inn, he ordered a dish of bread and eggs but was served stale bread. In an attempt to make it more palatable, the chef soaked it in a mixture of milk and eggs and then fried it. Voila! French toast was born. Regardless of its origins, French toast is now a beloved breakfast dish worldwide and is enjoyed in many variations. The addition of raisin bread in this recipe adds a fun twist to this classic dish.

In today’s busy world, it’s easy to forget the importance of showing our loved ones how much we care. Mothers, in particular, have an incredibly hard job and deserve all the love and attention on their special day. This year, I encourage you to make something special and delicious for your mom. Raisin Bread French Toast is an easy and creative way to celebrate the wonderful woman who brought you into this world. Perfect for a relaxing breakfast in bed or a fun family brunch, this recipe is sure to impress. So go ahead and surprise your mom with this delightful treat and show her how much she means to you!

What you need

Looking for an easy and delicious way to celebrate Mother’s Day? Look no further than this Raisin Bread French Toast recipe! With its perfect balance of sweetness and crunch, this French toast is a treat that your mom is sure to love. The recipe requires only a few ingredients: raisin bread, eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, butter, maple syrup, and powdered sugar. To make the French toast, all you need to do is whisk together the egg mixture, dip the bread slices, cook them until golden brown and crispy, and serve with maple syrup and powdered sugar. This recipe is truly a special way to wake up mom and show her how much you care!

Ingredients:

  • Raisin bread – Raisin bread is the star ingredient of this recipe, it adds a natural sweetness and texture to the french toast. If you can’t find raisin bread, you can use any bread of your choice and add raisins separately.
  • Egg – Egg acts as a binding agent for the french toast and adds richness and flavor to the dish. If you are vegan, you can use flaxseed powder mixed with water as an egg replacement.
  • Milk – Milk adds creaminess and a more subtle sweetness to the dish. You can use plant-based milk as a vegan alternative.
  • Vanilla extract – Vanilla extract adds a warm, comforting, and sweet flavor to the recipe.
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon adds a warm and spiced flavor to the dish and it pairs perfectly with raisins. You can also add nutmeg or pumpkin spice if desired.
  • Butter – Butter is used for frying the French toast and it adds a rich flavor and a crispy texture to the dish. You can use coconut oil or any other plant-based butter as a vegan or dairy-free alternative.
  • Maple syrup – Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that pairs perfectly with French toast. You can also use honey or agave syrup as a substitute.
  • Powdered sugar – Powdered sugar adds a sweet and decorative touch to the finished dish. You can also use granulated sugar or skip it altogether.

Utensils:

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Non-stick Skillet – Use a non-stick skillet for the best results. If you don’t have a non-stick skillet, use a regular skillet and add more oil or butter to prevent sticking.
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Kitchen Tongs
  • Plate or Platter
  • Serrated Knife – Use a serrated knife to cut the bread, it will prevent the bread from squishing.

Raisin bread

Whenever I see raisin bread, it brings back memories of my childhood. My mom used to make raisin bread French toast for breakfast on special occasions, and it was such a treat. But, raisin bread is not only delicious, it’s also a healthier option than traditional white bread. Raisin bread contains fiber, B vitamins, and minerals. Plus, the raisins add some natural sweetness to the bread, which means you can use less sugar in the recipe. So, the next time you’re craving French toast, try using raisin bread for an extra special touch.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of my all-time favorite spices. It adds warmth, depth, and complexity to any dish, from sweet to savory. But did you know that cinnamon has some surprising health benefits? It’s loaded with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol, too. In this Raisin Bread French Toast recipe, cinnamon is the perfect complement to the raisins and adds a warm, spicy flavor to the dish. So, not only does cinnamon taste great, it’s also good for you. Just make sure to use it in moderation, as too much of a good thing can be bad for you.

What to serve it with?

I love Raisin Bread French Toast with a side of fresh fruit, especially sliced strawberries or bananas. The sweetness of the fruit pairs perfectly with the savory flavor of the toast and adds a refreshing touch to the dish. Plus, it’s a healthy addition that makes the whole meal feel more wholesome. Also, I like to add a dollop of whipped cream on top for an extra indulgent twist. It makes for a delightful breakfast that feels luxurious and special, perfect for a Mother’s Day treat or just as a weekend brunch idea. I hope you give this recipe a try, and don’t forget to try it with some fresh fruit on the side to kick your morning off to a great start!
