Santana Rivera currently resides in the United States and grew up in Mexico.

As someone who was born and raised in Mexico, food has always played an integral role in my culture and identity. When I moved to the United States, I realized how much I missed the fresh, fruity flavors of home. That’s why I started experimenting with new ingredients in my cooking. I wanted to capture the essence of my childhood and blend it with the creativity and innovation of American cuisine. The Peach Cider Donuts with Cinnamon Sugar Glaze is the perfect example of this combination. It takes a classic American recipe and infuses it with the bold, vibrant flavors of Mexico. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Did you know that donuts were originally called ‘olykoeks’, meaning oily cakes? Yep, they were! The first donuts were recorded in New Amsterdam (now New York City) in the early 19th century, when Dutch immigrants brought their olykoeks recipe with them. Over time, the recipe evolved and the ring-shaped donut we know and love today was born. But despite the many iterations of the classic American donut, I was still on the hunt for something different. Something that captured the essence of my Mexican heritage. That’s when I stumbled upon fresh peach cider. It adds a brightness and juiciness to the donuts that is unparalleled. And with the addition of cinnamon sugar glaze, it’s a match made in heaven. This recipe may be a new twist on an old classic, but it has quickly become a favorite in my household – and soon, I hope, in yours too.

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour – All-purpose flour is the base of the donut dough. It cannot be substituted for this recipe.
  • Baking powder – Baking powder gives the donuts their signature airy texture. Baking soda cannot be substituted for this recipe.
  • Salt – Salt enhances the flavor of the donuts and helps to activate the baking powder. You can use sea salt or table salt for this.
  • Ground cinnamon – Ground cinnamon gives the donuts a touch of warmth and can be substituted with other warm spices like nutmeg or allspice.
  • Granulated sugar – Granulated sugar sweetens the donut dough and adds a nice crunch to the outside of the donuts. You can substitute it with coconut sugar or brown sugar.
  • Fresh peach cider – Fresh peach cider is the star ingredient here, giving the donuts their unique flavor and sweetness. If you can’t find it, you can substitute with apple cider or peach puree.
  • Egg – Egg acts as a binder and adds structure to the donut dough. A flax egg can be used instead for a vegan version.
  • Melted unsalted butter – Melted butter gives the donuts richness and flavor. You can substitute it with coconut oil or vegetable oil for a vegan version.
  • Powdered sugar – Powdered sugar is used to make the glaze for the donuts. It cannot be substituted for this recipe.
  • Ground cinnamon – Ground cinnamon is used to flavor the glaze and can be substituted with other warm spices like nutmeg or allspice.
  • Milk – Milk is used to make the glaze and can be substituted with any non-dairy milk for a vegan version.
  • Vanilla extract – Vanilla extract is used to flavor the glaze and can be substituted with almond or maple extract.

Utensils:

  • Donut pan – You’ll need a donut pan to make the donut shapes. If you don’t have one, you can use a muffin tin and shape the dough to make a round donut shape.
  • Large bowl – To mix the dough, you’ll need a large bowl.
  • Small bowl – To make the glaze, you’ll need a small bowl.
  • Whisk – To mix the dough and glaze, a whisk works best.
  • Spatula – To mix the dough, a spatula can be used instead of a whisk.
  • Oven – You’ll need an oven to bake the donuts.

Peach Cider: The Star of the Show

As a food writer and recipe developer, I’m always excited to experiment with new ingredients, but peach cider has become one of my all-time favorites. Made from fresh peaches, it’s an innovative and surprisingly versatile way to add natural sweetness and flavor to any dish, and it’s perfect for this Peach Cider Donut recipe. Not only is peach cider lower in sugar and calories than traditional apple cider, it also offers a range of health benefits that make it a smart choice for any diet. Peaches are low in carbs and high in natural antioxidants, which can help to reduce inflammation and protect against chronic diseases. Plus, peach cider is incredibly easy to find during peach season, and it’s a great way to show off the juicy, ripe taste of summer peaches.

Powdered Sugar: The Secret to a Perfect Glaze

Powdered sugar, also known as confectioner’s sugar, is an essential ingredient in any good baking recipe. But many people don’t realize just how versatile and useful powdered sugar can be, especially when it comes to making glazes and icings. In this recipe for Peach Cider Donuts with Cinnamon Sugar Glaze, powdered sugar is the key to achieving that perfectly smooth, shiny glaze that makes these donuts so irresistible. Unlike regular granulated sugar, which can leave a gritty texture in glazes, powdered sugar dissolves easily and creates a silky, glossy finish. And because it’s so finely ground, it’s also great for dusting on top of cakes and pastries for an extra burst of sweetness. So go ahead and stock up on powdered sugar – it’s a must-have in any baker’s pantry!

What to serve it with?

I love serving my Peach Cider Donuts with Cinnamon Sugar Glaze with a hot cup of coffee or chai tea. The warmth and earthiness of the drink complements the sweet tanginess of the donuts perfectly. But, if you really want to take it up a notch, serve the donuts with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh peach slices on the side. The creaminess of the whipped cream and the freshness of the fruit add a whole new dimension to the already delicious donuts. It’s the perfect combination of sweet, tart, and creamy. I love how versatile this recipe is – it can be served with so many different sides and drinks, depending on your mood and occasion!
