As an adventurous chef and avid traveler, I have always been fascinated by the way different cultures celebrate food. Growing up in Mumbai, India, breakfast was always about warming, savory meals like dosa or spicy scrambled eggs. But when I moved to Canada, I discovered a whole new world of breakfast possibilities, including these fun and playful waffles. I love adding a touch of color and whimsy to my recipes, and these Joyful Funfetti Waffles are the perfect example of that.

The origins of Funfetti Waffles are somewhat shrouded in mystery, but one thing is for sure – they’re a quintessentially American breakfast food. Some say they were invented by a home cook who wanted a way to make her kids’ breakfasts more exciting, while others say they were popularized by a certain famous pancake chain. Whatever their origins, Funfetti Waffles have become a beloved breakfast classic in the United States and around the world. And with this recipe, you’ll be able to bring a little bit of that colorful, joyful spirit to your own breakfast table.

  • All-purpose flour – A pantry staple used to give structure to the waffle batter. Can be swapped with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Baking powder – A leavening agent that makes the waffles rise. Cannot be swapped.
  • Salt – Enhances the flavors of the waffles. Can be adjusted or omitted according to personal preference.
  • Granulated sugar – Adds sweetness to the waffles. Can be adjusted according to personal preference.
  • Milk – Provides moisture and richness to the waffle batter. Can be swapped with non-dairy milk for a vegan version.
  • Vegetable oil – Adds fat to the waffle batter and gives the waffles a crispy texture. Can be swapped with melted butter for a richer flavor.
  • Vanilla extract – Adds flavor and aroma to the waffles. Can be swapped with other flavorings such as almond or maple extract.
  • Rainbow sprinkles – Adds color and crunch to the waffles. Can be swapped with chocolate chips, nuts or dried fruits for a different texture.

Utensils:

  • Waffle maker – Cannot be replaced. This recipe requires a waffle maker to cook the waffles properly.
  • Large mixing bowl – Cannot be replaced. This is where the waffle batter is prepared.
  • Whisk – An essential tool to combine the wet and dry ingredients for making the waffles. Can also use a fork if a whisk is not available.
  • Measuring cups and spoons – An essential tool to ensure accurate measurement of the ingredients. Can use regular cups and teaspoons if measuring cups and spoons are not available.
  • Rubber spatula – An essential tool to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl and to fold in the sprinkles.

Rainbow sprinkles

Rainbow sprinkles are one of the most cheerful and colorful toppings you can add to any dessert. Not only do they add a pop of color to baked goods, but they also provide a fun texture that makes eating the food more enjoyable. In this recipe, rainbow sprinkles are folded into the waffle batter, infusing each bite with bursts of color and crunch. Contrary to popular belief, rainbow sprinkles are not just for kids, but can add some whimsy to anyone’s day. Although they do not have much nutritional value, adding a tablespoon or two to a recipe such as this waffle recipe can be a tasty treat to brighten up your day. Give it a try and see how it brightens up your breakfast or dessert.

Vanilla extract

Vanilla extract may seem like a basic ingredient, but it adds a subtle and nuanced flavor to baked goods such as waffles. Derived from the seed pods of the vanilla orchid, vanilla extract is a versatile ingredient used in many desserts and pastries. Its aroma can be inviting, and its flavor can be soothing and refreshing. In this waffle recipe, vanilla extract is used to give the waffles a richer and more complex flavor profile, making them taste even more indulgent. What’s more, vanilla extract has some health benefits. It contains antioxidants that can help prevent the effects of aging and boost the immune system. It also has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Although it is a small amount in this recipe, vanilla extract can be a potent ingredient not to be overlooked. So go ahead, add a splash of vanilla extract to your recipe and see how much it can enhance the flavor of your favorite baked goods.

What to serve it with?

I love to serve my Joyful Funfetti Waffle Delights with a dollop of whipped cream and a generous drizzle of maple syrup. The combination of fluffy waffle, creamy topping, and sweet syrup is simply divine. The contrast of the crispy exterior of the waffle with the pillowy soft core is only heightened by the addition of the whipped cream. Not only does it elevate the dish in both flavor and texture, but it also mimics the fluffy funfetti element of the recipe. In my opinion, serving these waffles with whipped cream and maple syrup brings out the fun and whimsy of the recipe, while also satisfying my sweet tooth.

Equipment

  • Waffle maker
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • rubber spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups Milk
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup Rainbow sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat the waffle maker - Preheat the waffle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions, and preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) to keep the already cooked waffles warm. The waffle maker may take a few minutes to heat up, so you can use this time to prepare the waffle batter. - Make sure your waffle maker is clean and prepared with cooking spray before preheating it. You can also use non-stick cooking spray with flour for extra non-stickiness to give your waffles a perfect golden brown color.
  • Combine the dry ingredients - In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until blended. - Sift the dry ingredients through a fine-mesh strainer for an even smoother batter without any lumps.
  • Combine the wet ingredients - In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth and well-combined. - Make sure your wet ingredients are at room temperature to avoid clumps and to help the ingredients to blend together more easily.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients - Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and stir gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix the batter to keep the waffles fluffy and light. A few small lumps may remain, but that's okay. Fold in the rainbow sprinkles until evenly distributed. - Do not use an electric mixer or overmix the batter, as this will activate the gluten in the flour and make the waffles tough and chewy. If the batter is too thick, add a splash of milk and stir gently.
  • Cook the waffles - Ladle the batter onto the center of the hot waffle maker, and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. Transfer the cooked waffles to a baking sheet and keep them warm in the oven while cooking the remaining batches. - Avoid opening the waffle maker prematurely, which can cause the waffles to stick and become misshapen. Keep an eye on the waffles, and remove them from the waffle maker promptly when they are cooked.
  • Serve and enjoy - Serve the waffles warm with your favorite toppings, such as whipped cream, syrup, or fresh fruit. Enjoy your colorful and festive waffle delights! - Try serving the waffles with different toppings, such as Nutella, peanut butter, or ice cream, or experiment with different flavors of extracts and sprinkles to customize your waffles according to your taste.
