Amira is an avid traveler and language enthusiast from a small town in Morocco. She has lived in several countries and is always on the lookout for new experiences. In her free time, she enjoys cooking traditional Moroccan dishes and experimenting with new recipes.

Amira Bouchard currently resides in Canada and grew up in Morocco.

Growing up in Morocco, peanuts were a common ingredient in many dishes. From savory stews to sweet pastries, peanuts were used in countless ways. So, when I discovered peanut butter sauce, I was immediately excited to try it! The creaminess and nuttiness of the peanut butter make the sauce not only irresistible, but also comforting and familiar. No matter where I’ve lived, I’ve always stocked up on peanut butter just to make sure I have this sauce on hand.

You’ll be surprised to learn that peanut sauce actually originates from Indonesia! It’s commonly used in many Southeast Asian dishes, such as satay and gado-gado. In these regions, the sauce is made with kaffir lime, galangal, and coconut milk, giving it a unique and fragrant flavor. Over time, different variations of the sauce have been created and adapted throughout the world. By adding soy sauce and honey to the mix, this recipe adds a delicious umami flavor that amps up the taste. It’s amazing how something as simple as a peanut sauce can be so versatile and bring so much joy to a dish. Give this recipe a try and taste for yourself why it’s one of my favorites!

Peanut Butter: The Star of the Show

Peanut butter is a versatile ingredient that can be used in sandwiches, snacks, and even savory dishes like this irresistible peanut sauce. As a nut butter, peanut butter is a good source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. It’s also high in calories, so use it in moderation if you’re watching your weight. I love peanut butter because it’s a great addition to any meal and makes everything taste better. Did you know that peanut butter was invented by a doctor in 1895 as a protein substitute for people who couldn’t chew meat? Today, peanut butter is a household staple that makes every meal more delicious.

Sesame Oil: The Secret Ingredient

Sesame oil is an essential ingredient in many Asian cuisines, and for good reason. It’s made from roasted sesame seeds and has a nutty, fragrant aroma and taste that elevates any dish. Sesame oil is rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins. It’s also a good source of calcium, which is essential for strong bones. In this peanut sauce recipe, sesame oil adds a distinct flavor that complements the nuttiness of peanut butter. It’s a small amount, but it makes a huge difference in the overall taste. Fun fact: sesame oil was one of the first vegetable oils ever produced, dating back to ancient Babylon and Assyria. Today, it’s a staple in many kitchens around the world and adds depth and complexity to any dish.

What to serve it with?

I absolutely love serving this Irresistible Homemade Peanut Sauce with so many different dishes! One of my favorite ways to eat this sauce is as a dip for fresh spring rolls. The combination of the cool, crisp vegetables wrapped in a soft rice paper shell with the warm, nutty sauce is simply heavenly. Another way I love to use this sauce is as a marinade for chicken satay. The sauce really clings to the juicy chicken and the smoky flavor from grilling makes for an irresistible combination. Lastly, I can’t forget to mention how well this peanut sauce pairs with stir-fried vegetables and noodles. The richness of the sauce pairs perfectly with the umami flavors of the stir-fried veggies and the chewiness of the noodles. This sauce is so versatile that I’ve served it with everything from grilled tofu to roasted sweet potatoes!

Equipment

  • small bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Garlic Press
  • Small saucepan

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Peanut Butter
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 2 cloves, minced Garlic
  • 2 tbsp Lime Juice
  • 2 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes

Instructions

  • Mix the peanut butter, soy sauce, and honey - In a small bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, soy sauce, and honey until smooth and well combined. - If the peanut butter is too thick, microwave it for a few seconds to make it easier to whisk with the other ingredients.
  • Add the garlic, lime juice, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes - Add the minced garlic, lime juice, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes to the peanut butter mixture and whisk until well combined. - Make sure to mince the garlic finely to avoid large chunks in the sauce.
  • Thin the sauce with water - Gradually add water to the sauce, whisking constantly, until you reach the desired consistency. If you prefer a thicker sauce, use less water. If you prefer a thinner sauce, use more water. - Add the water a little at a time to avoid making the sauce too thin.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning - Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to your liking. You can add more soy sauce or lime juice if you want it to be saltier or tangier, respectively. You can also add more honey or red pepper flakes if you want it to be sweeter or spicier, respectively. - Remember that the sauce will become a little saltier after you add it to your dish, so don't overdo it on the soy sauce.
  • Serve and enjoy! - Use the peanut sauce as a topping, dip, or marinade for your favorite dishes. It pairs well with grilled chicken, tofu, rice, noodles, and vegetables. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. - Try adding the sauce to a stir-fry or using it as a salad dressing for a quick and flavorful meal.
